Port wine stains - Causes, Picture, Symptoms and Treatment of Port wine stains

Port wine stains are flat red marks usually found on the face and scalp. Port wine stains cannot be removed by cutting them out.

A port wine stain is a vascular birthmark usually a large flat patch of purple or dark red skin with well-defined borders caused by blood vessel abnormality, capillary malformation of the skin. At birth the surface of the port-wine stain is flat, but with time it becomes puffy and often more unsightly. Although they may occur anywhere on the body, but the face is most commonly affected. Where present, they generally appear on one side of the body with a sharp mid-line cut-off.

Signs and Symptoms of Port Wine Stains

  • Lesion is usually present at birth.
  • Newborn infant with a flat pink to purplish lesion on skin.
  • Most commonly seen on face and neck (but may occur on trunk or extremities).
  • Older child with a slightly more reddish to purplish lesion, flat to slightly raised.
  • Adult with darkly red to purplish lesion.

What are the causes and risks of the condition?

A port wine stain on the face can be a part of Sturge-Weber syndrome . This syndrome also involves problems with blood vessels in the eyes and brain. However, a port wine stain does not usually mean that Sturge-Weber syndrome is present.

Treatment of Port wine stains

Port wine stains should be treated by laser as infrared treatment. They can be camouflaged.

Many treatments was tested for spots port-wine including/understanding to freeze, surgery, radiation, and tattooing. The lasers made the greatest impact on the treatment, because they are the single method to destroy the tiny blood vessels in the skin without significant damage with the overlying skin. The laser of dye pumped by flashlamp, a yellow laser of light, was the most successful with the spots détruisantes in the infants and the infants. Two other lasers of yellow light -- krypton and the vapor copper laser -- were employed successfully in the adults. The neodymium-YAG laser is used to treat deeply, the spots nodular and mauve-dark of port-wine.
