Birthmark is a blemish or area of pigmentation found on the skin. They are brown, pink, purple or red in color and are generally caused by a collection of blood vessels below the skin. There are various types, including stork whites (pink patches on the eye lids or nose that disappear after about a year). Mongolian spots are blue marks found on the lower back, particularly on black, asian or medeterranean babies.

Strawberry birth mark are red and vary in size, and portwine stains are large red or purple marks often found on the face and the neck. They are permanant but can be removed in later life by laser treatment.
