Frictional melanonychia is a nails discoloration of the toes due to repeated trauma  to toenails, caused by ill-fitting shoes. Fungal infection can be considered as the cause of this disorder.

Causes of melanonychia is malnutrition, especially vitamin B12 deficiency, effects of cytotoxic drugs, pituitary tumours. Melanonychia is paradoxical, as increased skin pigmentation is frequent in the latter disease.

Longitudinal Melanonychia, also known as Melanonychia Striata results from deposition of melanin in the nail plate from a variety of causes.

Longitudinal melanonychia is most worrisome when there is a solitary, dark, broad longitudinal band with pigment extending over the proximal nail fold (Hutchinson's sign. It must be differentiated from the Melanonychia caused by melanocytic lesions in people with subungual malignant melanoma, especially if noted in a single nail, and is associated with scleroderma in rare cases.

Treatment of melanonychia

Homeopathic remedies can cure this problem, though may be prescribed by a licensed certified homeopath only. For disciolored nails homeopaths usually prescribe Graphites 12X, Nitric Acid 12x, 4 pellets a day up to 2 months.
