Info on Abortion Alternative - Picture, Cost and Procedure for Abortion in pregnancy
Abortion, the termination of a pregnancy before the foetus is capable of living. It may be induced by medical or surgical means or it may be spontaneous or natural, when it is usually called a miscarriage. Abortion in the former sense has been controversial for hundreds of years and is illegal in many countries. In the USA, it is governed by laws in each state, with different restrictions on how and when abortions can be carried out. In the UK, it is permitted upto 24 weeks from the woman's last menstrual period (LMP), although most procedures are carried out in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Any abortion carries the risk of infecting the higher reproductive organs. Some women may have sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea without showing any symptoms and abortion can alllow access of the disease to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The resultant damage can cause infertility. Many women can think that an abortion could reduce their fertility in later life. With no infection, recent studies have shown that abortion does not normally affect fertility. Abortion if often carried out because of an abnormality in the foetus. The defect is normally found via amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling. Termination of foetuses with genetic defects generally occurs later than most abortions, often between 16 to 20 weeks. Abortion is a complex issue with strong emotional connections. Many pregnancies that are terminated result from unprotected sex, failure of contraceptives and rape. Facing the fact of an unwanted pregnancy can raise feelings of guilt, grief and pain. These feelings are not wrong and should be dealt with and not hidden. Pre- and post -abortion counseling can help deal with the complex emotions that arise. |
