History of Yoga

Nobody knows exactly the history of Yoga has began, but it certainly was developed long ago. There are stone carvings and figure that depict different Yoga poses found in Indus Valley way back 5,000 years ago. A common belief is that Yoga is rooted from the teachings of Hinduism. However, the religious practices of Hinduism developed later and infused the practices of Yoga.

The practices of Yoga have been passed from one generation to another from teachers to their students. This happened through practical demonstration and oral teaching. The more formal practice is now termed as Yoga, depicting that it started from the collective experiences of people over many years ago. The specific manner which the methods are practiced now depends on the method passed down to the teacher himself.

An ancient text that tells something about Yoga is the compilation made by Patanjali, a scholar that set down Yoga practice ad theories in his book entitled Yoga Sutras in the early 1st or 2nd BC, or even as late as the 5th century AD. He wrote the system called Ashtanga Yoga, better known as 8 limbs of Yoga, is now termed as Classical Yoga.

Yoga Invades the United States

Part of the history of Yoga is when it arrived in the US during the 1800’s, but wasn’t known widely until 1960’s. This is as part of the youth’s interest in Eastern history. As years go by, US citizens started to accept and respect the teachings of Yoga because of its beneficial effects. People from the United States consider Yoga as a wonderful method to help them manage stress and improve health. Because of the growing popularity of Yoga in the US, even doctors recommend Yoga on their patients as part of a healing therapy for stress, depression, insomnia, and other disorders. Doctors also believe that it can help cure heart disease, arthritis and back pain.

Yoga as Part of Religion

Next thing to know about Yoga is that it’s not a religion as other people are saying about it. Part of the history of Yoga is it has no set of beliefs and creed. There is no recommended godlike figure that must be worshipped in a specific manner. Yoga believes that everything is supplied within the person so there must not be dependence in a godly figure.

The belief that Yoga rooted from Hinduism is not true, and it actually predates Hinduism for many years. Yoga has been practiced as early as 3,000 BCE and the method of it has been adopted by religions worldwide like Hinduism. It is a method or technique that can be utilized for certain goals such as stress management, relaxation, and inner peace.

Conclusion:

Yoga history is dated back from thousands of years ago that has been proven by the scriptures or text found in the Indus Valley. In the modern times, Yoga has been practiced continually, and used by individuals to be a better person.

Yoga aims for holistic healing, dealing with all aspects of a person---mentally, physically, and spiritually—as it works for the totality of the mind, body, and spirit.
