Achilles Tendonitis - Treatment and Exercise for Chronic Achilles Tendonitis

Alternative Names: Ligament or Tendon Rupture

Complete or partial rupture of a ligament (eg. at sides of ankle) or tendon (eg. Achilles tendon at back of ankle). A ligament joins one bone to another, while a tendon joins a muscle to a bone.

Cause of Achilles Tendonitis

Excessive force being applied to the tendon or ligament.

Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis

Severe pain and loss of function of the joint or muscle, followed by swelling and bruising.

Achilles Tendonitis Investigations

X-rays may be taken to exclude fracture. Ultrasound scan can show rupture.

Achilles Tendonitis Treatment

Depends on site and severity. Joint may be immobilized in a cast for weeks or months, or the rupture may be surgically repaired.

Complications: Ligament may be slack after healing allowing excessive movement in joint, increased risk of further damage, and premature arthritis.

Prognosis: Usually very good results from treatment.

Fitness Tip

Osteopathy uses massage and stretching techniques to reduce muscle tension and improve blood supply to the tissues to restore the full range of movement to the joint. Neck pain and whiplash injuries can be treated by having the neck vertebrae realigned.

Beauty Tip

Make sure your lips have been moisturised, and foundation/powder applied. Outline your shape with a lip pencil in natural or a toning shade to the chosen lipcolour. Apply lipstick with a lipbrush. Then blot by kissing a tissue held between the lips, then reapply more colour. Choose colour tones in either warm or cool tones to suit your complexion.
