Ruptured Disk - Symptoms and Treatment for Back Ruptured Disk

Also known as - Herniated Disk, Slipped Disk, Herniated Nucleus Pulposus, Ruptured disks or Bad back is too common among perfectly pain-free people. A disk is like the filling in an Oreo cookie. Rupture or herniation occurs when the filling squishes out in one spot. Sometimes this puts painful pressure on a nerve. Victims may feel sciatica, or tingling or darting pains in the leg. A more common abnormality is bulging in which the filling sticks out the same amount all the way around.

Spinal disc abnormalities:

  • Pinched nerve
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated disc (or herniated disk)
  • Bulging disc
  • Ruptured disc
  • Slipped disc
  • Disc protrusion
  • Disc degeneration
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Disc disease
  • Black disc

Symptoms of herniated disk?

When part of a disk presses on a nerve, it can cause pain in both the back and the legs. The place you have pain depends on which disk is weak. The intensity of pain depends on how much of the disk is pressing on the nerve. In most people with herniated disks, the pain spreads over the buttocks and goes down the back of one thigh and into the calf. Some people have pain in both legs. Some people's legs or feet feel numb or tingly.

Treatment of Ruptured Disks

Apply ice packs to the painful area during the first 72 hours and occasionally thereafter, if they provide relief. Alternately, try to relieve pain with a heat lamp, hot showers, hot baths, warm compresses or a heating pad.

Dietary cure

Increase consumption of dietary fiber and drink at least 8 glasses of fluid a day to prevent constipation or fecal impaction due to decreased physical activity during treatment.

How to prevent ruptured disks

  • If previously injured, avoid any vigorous physical activity that requires twisting of the body under uncontrollable conditions.
  • Practice proper posture when lifting.
  • Exercise regularly to maintain good muscle tone.
