Dog Bite - Treatment, Picture, Statistics of Dog Bite - Symptoms, Causes Home Treatment for Dog Bite

Dog bite statistics are alarming.  We need to do more to educate the public on what to do to avoid an aggressive encounter with a dog, and how to respond when you find yourself in danger of being bitten.

Care for prevention from Dog Bite

  • First of all, children should be taught NOT to approach strange dogs at all, period.  If the dog is unknown to you, anything could happen.
  • The best approach when introducing yourself to a new dog is a sideways one.  A sideways stance is less threatening to a dog
  • If you look calm, the dog will be calm.
  • Never try to use intimidation to "chase away" an aggressive dog, unless you are sure that the dog is very fearful.  A fearful dog will respect and avoid a "stronger being", while they may attempt to bite someone who runs away.

What a Doctor will do incase of Dog Bite

  • Examine the wound for possible nerve or tendon damage, or bone injury. He or she will also check for signs of infection.
  • Clean the wound with a special solution and remove any damaged tissue.
  • May use stitches to close a bite wound, but often the wound is left open to heal, so the risk of infection is lowered.
  • May prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection.
  • May give you a tetanus shot if you had your last shot more than 5 years ago.
  • May ask you to schedule an office visit to check your wound again in 1 to 2 days.
  • If your injury is severe, or if the infection has not gotten better even though you're taking antibiotics, your doctor may suggest that you see a specialist and/or go to the hospital, where you can get special medicine given directly in your veins (intravenous antibiotics) and further treatment if necessary.

Do I need Rabies Shot?

Probably not. Rabies is uncommon in dogs in the United States. If a dog that bit you appeared to be healthy at the time of the bite, it's unlikely that the animal had rabies. However, it's a good idea to take some precautions if you're bitten by a dog.

Recommendations for Prevention of Dog Bite at home

  1. Properly socialize your puppy.
  2. Teach your children to respect life.
  3. If you have toddlers, create a safe "haven" for your dog.
  4. NEVER trust your young child alone with your dog or puppy, EVER.
  5. Enroll your dog (and family) in a home obedience course.
  6. If you start to see any resource guarding behaviors, call a pet behavior counselor immediately.
