Acanthosis Nigricans - Picture, Treatment and Symptoms of Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans can affect otherwise healthy people, or it can be associated with medical problems. Acanthosis nigricans usually appears slowly and doesn't cause any symptoms other than skin changes.

Acanthosis nigricans may begin at any age. Acanthosis nigricans can affect otherwise healthy people, or it can be associated with medical problems. The cause of the Acanthosis Nigricans is endocrine disorder or a tumor.

What are the causes of Acanthosis nigricans?

The cause for acanthosis nigricans is still not clearly defined but it appears to be related to insulin resistance. It has been associated with various benign and malignant conditions. Based on the pre-disposing conditions, acanthosis nigricans has been divided into 7 types.

It is most common among people of African descent. Rarely acanthosis nigricans is associated with a tumor. Acanthosis nigricans may also be caused by hormone problems such as insulin resistance, polycystic ovary syndrome, acromegaly, or Cushing's syndrome.

Symptoms of Acanthosis nigricans

It is important, however, to attempt to treat any underlying medical problem that may be causing these skin changes. Acanthosis nigricans is a disorder that causes light-brown-to-black, velvety, rough areas or increased skin markings usually on the back and sides of the neck.

Treatment of Acanthosis nigricans

Consult your doctor if you notice changes in your skin - especially if the changes appear suddenly. You may have an underlying condition that needs treatment. Treatments of acanthosis nigricans include antibiotic ointments or creams, retinoids, taken orally or used in a cream or topical corticosteroid creams.

When acanthosis nigricans develops a medical work-up should be done to determine whether or not the patient has a gland (endocrine) disorder or a tumor.

Fitness Tip

Take a quick watch around the neighborhood before breakfast or after dinner. Even small increments of daily activity can burn body fat. Walking not only tones your hips, legs and lower back muscles, but also keeps you energized throughout the day.

Beauty Tip

Nails are formed from keratin, the tough protein that also makes up hair and skin. They grow from the matrix, which lies beneath a fold of skin (the cuticle). The growing nail slides forward over the nail-bed, an area rich in blood vessels.
