Pruritus Ani (medicalese for itchy butt.)

To itch around the anal sector, called the Pruritus Ani, is a common state. One to recommend irresistible to stripe results. It can be apparent and obstructing the night or after movements of entrails. Pruritus ani is also associated with certain systemic disorders such as jaundice, diabetes, lymphoma, and uremia. The itch may be made worse by heat, wool, moisture, leaking, soiling, stress, and anxiety.

What is the cause of Pruritus Ani

It's not the result of lack of anal hygiene - just the opposite: It's caused by excessive wiping of the area, which removes protective natural oils, leading to inflammation. That's what causes the itching sensation.

And it's more common than you might imagine. Doctors think it's underreported because people are uncomfortable discussing it. Pinworms can cause sever anal itching and should be thought of if several members of the family have this problem.  One can see the worms by putting scotch tape over the area than looking at the tape.  This problem requires treatment by a physician.

Solution and Treatment of Pruritus Ani

Your doctor may prescribe a hydrocortisone in aerosol form, to be used after every bowel movement (but for no more than 2 weeks), which helps ease the inflammation.

  • Medications which have been succesful for this condition include:
    - Lotrimin cream mixed with hydrocortisone 1% cream applied daily. Both of these are available over the counter at your local drug store.
      - A mild alpha hydroxyacid applied each day.
      - Plain vaseline applied each day to the anal area.
  • Pruritus ani is frequently stubborn and requires months of local medication and gentle skin care.

How to prevent the Pruritus Ani

Blot, don't wipe the area after washing. If you use toilet paper, dampen it first (tear out an extra long strip)

Fitness Tip

In your leisure times, opt for activities that excite you. Go to the park, walk the dog, plan picnics or do something more adventurous like hiking, rock-climbing paddle boating or scuba diving.

Beauty Tip

Nails are formed from keratin, the tough protein that also makes up hair and skin. They grow from the matrix, which lies beneath a fold of skin (the cuticle). The growing nail slides forward over the nail-bed, an area rich in blood vessels.
