Tenia Pedis - Causes, Treatment, Picture and Symptoms of Tenia Pedis

Tenia Pedis fungus is conveyed from one individual to another through bath mats, tubs and swimming pools. Europeans are very sensitive to it; they pick up the infection quickly and suffer from it more severely than the native population.

The fungus grows in the stratum corneum of the epidermis in warm and moist areas; for this reason the fourth interdigital spaces of the feet are selectively affected.

Here it is seen as a sodden, white membrane covering a red, glazed, fissured skin. Vesicles may be seen at the periphery. This is the chronic inter-digital form.

Symptoms of Tenia Pedis

There are no symptoms except slight itching. From the fourth interdigital space, the disease may spread to the sole, to the adjoining toes and even to the dorsum of the feet .

Differential Diagnosis of Tenia Pedis

It must be differentiated from other causes of hyperkeratosis like syphilis, psoriasis, menopausal keratoderma, eczema, congenital keratoderma, arsenic drug eruption etc. The fungus is rather difficult to demonstrate in this variety.

The interdigital variety of tinea of the feet is the most common variety found in practice. A search must be made for this chronic focus in patients presenting dyshidrosis; keratoderma, tinea cruris and tinea unguium.

Treatment of Tenia Pedis

Fungicidal dusting powders like Nycil (P), Mycozol (P), Teoquil (P) and Tineafax (P) etc., help to keep the feet dry and so discourage the growth of fungus. Topical corticosteroids are very useful in acute cases of tinea for controlling acute inflammation till the necessary fungicidal agents can be safely employed by themselves or in combination with them. Griseofulvin is useful in chronic, extensive and resistant cases.
