Rhinosporidiosis - Causes, Picture, Symptoms and Treatment of Rhinosporidiosis

Rhinosporidiosis is a very rare condition affecting mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, ears and larynx is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, presumably fungal by nature. Other areas of the skin esp. genitalia may also be involved at times.

Symptoms of Rhinosporidiosis

It is characterized by papillomatous, polypoid and tumor-like masses hanging (may be sessile too) from the anterior part of nasal mucosa and profuse mucoid discharge. The growths are benign and cause concern only by obstructing air and food passages.

Treatment of Rhinosporidiosis

Treatment is by desiccation and surgery. Pentavalent antimony may sometimes be helpful.

The other deeper fungi like sporotrichosis, histoplasmosis, coccidiodomycosis, cryptococcosis, North and South American blastomycosis etc., are very rare in India. Their cutaneous manifestations, except sporotrichosis, are minor as compared to systemic ones.
