Chromoblastomycosis - Causes, Picture, Symptoms and Treatment of Chromoblastomycosis
A few cases of this previously less known mycotic infection have been described in India . It is caused by Hornwdendrum pedrosoi, Hormodendrum compactum and Philialophora verrucosa. Patients are usually those prone to trauma and contact with dirt- the sons of the soil! Symptoms of ChromoblastomycosisSites of affection are most commonly the feet and legs, less so the hands and only rarely the other parts of the body. Lesions start as indurated, dirty-looking, papulo-nodules which slowly increase and take verrucous cauliflower-like appearance in a period of years. The Chromoblastomycosis condition is practically asymptomatic. In due course, econdary symptoms like lymphoedema due to extensive fibrosis, ulceration and secondary infection may develop. Regional lymphadenopathy is seen only after secondary infection. At times the clinical picture may be confused with lichenoid eruptions and lupus vulgaris. Diagnosis of ChromoblastomycosisDiagnosis is established by culture or demonstration of spores in biopsy material. Treatment of ChromoblastomycosisTreatment is unsatisfactory. Depending upon the clinical state electrocoagulation, iodides, cryosurgery and newer fungicides, local infiltration of amphotericin-B etc., can be tried. Amputation of the limb is considered only as a last resort since the progress is slow, the condition is benign and the usefulness of the limb can be retained for a long time.
