Astringents - Uses and Benefits of Astringents in Skin Care

Astringents help remove excess oil from skin, and are very helpful for those people with acne or oily skin. Astringents function the same way as toners, and the terms can be used interchangeably. These over the counter liquids are based on either witch hazel or alcohol in different strengths.

You can buy astringents almost anywhere. In general, if you buy them at salons and department stores they may cost more, but are often less irritating to the skin.

Astringents also help those with what is usually called "combination skin"--oily skin on the T-zone (central forehead, nose, and chin), and drier skin elsewhere on the face. Those people who have combination skin are usually advised to use the astringent exclusively in the T-zoned oily areas, and to moisturize the drier, outer parts of the face. Most dermatologists recommend the use of astringents on oily parts of the face not more than once or twice daily. Most dermatologists agree astringents should not be used on dry skin.

Fitness Tip

Drinking water before and during exercise will help you to perform at your best and keep going longer. One of the most important roles of water is to get rid of the excess heat produced by your exercising muscles.

Beauty Tip

While sensitive skin isn’t considered skin type, it is true that some skin regardless of whether it is oily, normal or dry – reacts to more factors than others. To ensure your skin remains reaction-free, you might want to avoid beauty products that contain these common irritants: preservatives, fragrance, dyes, vitamin E, PABA, oxybenzone, etc.
