SPF (Sun Protection Factor) sunscreen - SPF Record, Clothing, Swin wear and shirt
SPF stands for sun protection factor, and the acronym is used to convey how much protection a sunscreen gives. Actually, SPF measures only the amount of sun protection from the burning ultraviolet B rays, and does not measure protection from ultraviolet A rays. (Both ultraviolet B and A rays contribute to aging of the skin and skin cancer.) The higher the SPF number on the bottle of sunscreen, the more protection there is from the sun's ultraviolet Brays. As a rule of thumb, any sunscreen with an SPF of less than 15 will not provide much sun protection. For extended sun exposure for more than two hours, an SPF of at least 30 is recommended by most dermatologists. Because SPF measures only protection against ultraviolet B rays, it is advisable to make sure that the label of the sunscreen you buy also indicates it has ultraviolet A protection. There is currently no ratings system for ultraviolet A rays protection, but one is in the final stages of development. |
