Micro Dermabrasion - Picture and Cost of Dermabrasion Kit

What is Dermabrasion?

A dermabrasion removes the top layers of skin so that newer, smoother skin can replace them. Usually people undergo dermabrasion to get rid of sun-damaged skin; when new skin grows to replace it, the face looks healthier and younger. Dermabrasion is not meant to remove excess or baggy facial skin, nor is it a substitute for a face-lift.

The classic technique dermatologists have used for many years employs a sterilized electric sanding device. When this electric "sander" is applied to the skin, it removes the skin layer by layer. The depth of dermabrasion is determined by the number of layers that are removed. One of the challenges of classic dermabrasion is the even removal of the same amount of skin from all areas of the face. Bleeding during this procedure may further detract from your doctor's visual field. A good dermabrasion only removes enough layers to allow new skin to grow back and provide a younger, fresher look.

After affects of Dermabrasion

After dermabrasion, the face is very red and raw-looking. It may take many months to heal, but the healing process can be accelerated by carefully following your physician's aftercare instructions. Most people elect not to go out in public for several weeks after the procedure. Dermabrasion appears to work best for lighter-skinned people. Once healed, however, prior fine and deep wrinkling, acne scars, and blotchy, brown pigmentation are no longer on the face. A dermabrasion lasts for at least several years, if not longer. Because dermabrasion can be quite painful, intravenous sedation is required. Some dermatologists perform localized dermabrasions in order to smooth out raised or depressed scars, or post-surgical scars. This is done with the same sterile electric sanding machine used in a facial dermabrasion, but for a shorter period of time. Sometimes a dermatologist may simply use a special sandpaper-type material and hand sand the raised skin imperfection in order to even it out with the rest of the skin. With small areas of dermabrasion a localized anesthetic is injected. This process takes only a few weeks to heal.

What is Laser dermabrasion?

Laser dermabrasion is also called laser resurfacing. The super pulsed CO2 and Erbium:Yag lasers have high-frequency, microsecond pulses that allow for precision performance. The lasers vaporize microscopic layers of skin cells so that the depth of penetration-and hence risks including scarring-can be closely controlled. You can elect to have your entire face resurfaced or just the areas around the eyes or mouth. Lasers can also be used to smooth out deep acne scars. In general, laser dermabrasion is preferred over classic methods. The Erbium:Yag laser gives a more superficial dermabrasion than the super pulsed CO2 laser. Not as much sun-damaged skin is removed, and the recovery period is shorter. Still, the recovery period from the Erbium:Yag laser is one or two weeks longer than the recovery period following superficial chemical peels (which is negligible). The super pulsed CO2 laser is comparable to a deep chemical peel, such as a phenol peel, in terms of depth of penetration and recovery time. Because this procedure is painful it requires intravenous sedation. During the recovery period, the face is very raw-looking and may be scabbed, because the sun-damaged skin has been removed, and the new skin needs time to grow and regenerate. After the skin heals, blotchy brown pigmentation, persistent redness, and in rare instances, scarring, sometime occurs. Many scientists believe that lighter-skinned people tolerate and heal more safely after laser resurfacing than darker-skinned people. The effects of laser dermabrasion are also not always permanent, and sun-damaged skin can recur after several years.

Fitness Tip

In your leisure times, opt for activities that excite you. Go to the park, walk the dog, plan picnics or do something more adventurous like hiking, rock-climbing paddle boating or scuba diving.

Beauty Tip

If you chew and swallow your hair hairballs can develop in your stomach in several years. The strands become matted and trap undigested bits of food. They host colonies of bacteria. Surgery is the only way to remove them.
